Surprises in World Series
quarterfinals
CLIFTON PARK – One team at the 13-15-year-old Babe Ruth World Series doesn’t know how to quit and another almost put an exclamation point on the word ‘No” Wednesday night in Clifton Park.
West End Baseball from Williamsport, Pa., shocked their larger and more experienced competitors, Youngstown, Ohio in Wednesday’s quarterfinal opener, 4-3.
West End’s Eddie Belton led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a double, moved to third on Steven Stopper’s groundout before scoring on Brian Stopper’s sacrifice fly to centerfield.
In the night cap, Torrance, California’s Robert Ybarra, Jr. took a no-hitter into the bottom of the sixth until South Colonie’s Drew Rivera singled to right, ending the no-hit bid. The Southwest regional champion’s big man, William Kollmeyer, drilled a Peter Nylin offering over the right field wall for a 3-run home run to start the offensive onslaught, winning, 11-0.
The table is set for Thursday’s semifinal match-ups:
4 p.m. West End (Williamsport, Pa.) vs. Jefferson Parish (Metairie, La.)
7 p.m. Torrance, California vs. Waite Park, Minnesota
