The three hour event at the ice cream and eatery offered by Angel’s owners Marty and Linda Terwilliger open to charities and civic organizations located in Southern Saratoga County.
“My wife and I spent 24 years working at McDonald’s and raised more than $450,000 for the Ronald McDonald house doing fund raisers,” Marty Terwilliger said. “We brought that philosophy to Angel’s. You are nothing without your community.”
The owners allow a group to select a night from 5 to 8 p.m. where they come in an assist with the business. Volunteers scoop ice cream, take orders and clean tables. The group self-promotes the event through press releases, posters and spreading the event via word of mouth. The group receives 15 percent of all sales rung during the shift.
Currently Angel’s offers three fundraising programs, from the three-hour fundraising nights, advertising opportunities on their tray liners as well as selling coupon books for Angel’s Host Dogs.
“The Town (of Clifton Park) contacted us about the need for fundraising by the World Series and the candidate (Barlette) got behind it,” Terwilliger said. “It all came together.”
When Barlette was not behind the counter, working with the World Series players scooping ice cream and taking orders, she had time to discuss her thoughts in running for New York State Assembly.
“As I have visited homes the past few weeks the biggest complaint I receive is not about property taxes, but school taxes,” Barlette said. “I will be looking at and have people researching what can we do at the state level to ease this burden.
“One plan is the (New York State) Lottery that was established to provide money for education,” Barlette said. “Right now the funds are as low as two percent go to education and the rest is a slush fund. We need to move more back to our schools and not bet in a situation where we have to gouge our taxpayers. At the state level we also need to tighten our belts and pass some of the reserves to our tax payers and our children.”
Barlette said she has first-hand experience with community involvement with a World Series event. While living in Farmington, New Mexico she was part of the community to support hosting the annual Connie Mack World Series.
While currently representing towns in Albany County which will see the South Colonie 15-year-old Babe Ruth squad compete in the World Series and hoping to represent Southern Saratoga and its entry into the World Series as the host team, Barlette wouldn’t choose sides for the event.
“I do expect to attend a game,” Barlette said. “My heart is in it for all the kids, no matter what their jurisdiction.”
The Clifton Park 13-15-year-old Babe Ruth World Series will be held Aug. 18-25 on Clifton Common. Family passes are available by calling the World Series Ticket Hotline at
